With the recent layoffs of reporters at the Free Press and all this talk of the imminent demise of local news coverage, I find it interesting that Dan Lett is on the other side of the planet covering a story where the only local element is the name of the boat.
He may be doing good work, but I question whether this is ideal use of scare local journalist talent. Is there not enough news to cover here in Manitoba, or is this just a case of the Free Press
pimping out its journalists to other papers to make a few bucks?
Department of National Defence covered his trip. He's embedded, as are the other journalists with that ship. Free Press is making no money off this save for any increased circulation or website hits. He has broken big stories while there and your cynicism is unwarranted.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the insight, anon, but I still find it a little odd that a journalist from a local paper would find their way over there, given that it's a national story and there are national reporters covering it as well.
ReplyDeleteOh well, whatever. It's a great opportunity for Dan.
